Just a few miles south-west of Tetbury, you will find the beautiful Grade II listed Royal Oak nestling in the small village of Leighterton and surrounded by stunning countryside.
After parking in the good sized car-park and entering through the front door, you are greeted with a warm welcome from Will and Kat who took over the pub in October 2016. There are three lovely informal rooms around the bar area that are perfect for enjoying a drink or meal in a relaxed atmosphere in front of one of the roaring log fires. To the rear of the pub you will find another dining area with a wooden floor and oak beams which becomes a vibrant space during the very popular Sunday lunch service. There is also a pretty courtyard - a lovely place to enjoy a meal or drink outside in warmer months.
Behind the bar you will find a selection of excellent real ales from local breweries such as Uley Brewery in nearby Dursley and The Flying Monk Brewery in Malmesbury. There is also a regional guest ale, Black Rat Cider and Perry from Moles Brewery in neighbouring Wiltshire, an American craft pale ale, a Stout and a couple of good lagers. A well balanced and good value wine list is also available, with wines served by the glass or bottle.
Reviews of The Royal Oak mention the delightful food produced by their experienced head chef and his team. The menu features traditional British pub dishes and innovative specials using fresh seasonal and, wherever possible, local ingredients in a menu that changes regularly. This tempting mix of pub classics with a twist and mouth-watering specials is extremely well priced for food of such quality. The Sunday menu offers a choice of traditional roasts as well as fish dishes and vegetarian options. Smaller meals for children are also available.
Leighterton is steeped in history with the pub being the only "Royal Oak" that is situated directly on the Monarch's Way - the 615 mile route that Charles II took when fleeing Parliamentary troops after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The village boasts the largest Neolithic burial mound in the Cotswolds and a 13th century church. A nearby cemetery is the resting place for Australian airmen who were stationed at RAF Leighterton and died during the First World War. The British Legion hold an ANZAC memorial service and parade in the village every April.
