Despite my humble upbringing in the heart of industrial West Yorkshire, I realise that, in some respects, I have become a snob. I don’t buy supermarket own-brand ketchup, even though I’m 99.9% certain it’s the same product that’s in the Heinz bottles. I steadfastly refuse to wear fancy dress on my annual pilgrimage to the PDC World Darts finals. And I don’t buy burgers from mobile stands or stalls because they are of inferior quality. Or so I thought…………….
Today I went to the Cotswold Table in Kingham for the first time. I won’t document my entire list of purchases here, but it’s safe to say that I left with heavily-laden bags. However, in addition to the retail aspect, I also had my first encounter with the very friendly Lord and Lady Food Co. and their funky Piaggio Ape 50 van.
It’s served in a toasted brioche bun with lettuce, onions, gherkins, melted cheddar and French’s mustard and Heinz ketchup. Oh, and did I forget to mention it was topped with a healthy portion of slow cooked beef brisket doused in bourbon-flavoured BBQ sauce? A touch of genius!
It is testament to Elisa and Jon that they’re able to produce a burger of such high quality from a mobile set-up and I have had to endure a quantum shift in my position on where I can now buy burgers from. Given that I was wrong about that, I’ve already ordered a storm-trooper costume for the darts next December. Before that, I shall be stalking the Lord and Lady around the Cotswolds this summer, keen to try another of their noble burgers. You should too!
